A study in how the characters of Les Miserables look at the ones they love.
this is actually really interesting and insightful to their individual characters because if you study them and their faces you can learn who they are from just one glance
grantaire is mesmerized. the slight tilt of his mouth, however, shows that he’s feeling self-deprecating as if wondering “how could anyone like him love anyone like me?” he’s swept up in the grandeur that is enjolras but he feels so small next to a man such as he that he’s no more than a spectator in a crowd. not to mention that simply because the last PUBLIC BURNINGSof queer* individuals took place almost 90 years ago in the time of 1832, that didn’t mean that it was okay. (fuck man, france JUST got marriage equality/same-sex adoption rights this year. 2013.) grantaire probably battled with feelings of self-loathing over his feelings of desire and drank to combat that, wondering how a man like enjolras would even look at him.
cosette looks playful. living a sheltered life with only valjean for company and not really a clue as to who her caretaker really was, love is not something that came to her freely. she had to remain strong and resolute in the face of the thenardiers and during times of trouble. but suddenly there is this beautiful boy looking at her and she’s looking at him and maybe, she thinks, just maybe things won’t be so bad this time around.
marius is awestruck. after being kicked out of his home, lied to about his father, spurning his riches, and nearly losing his spot in the university, he sees cosette on the streets and it’s like a breath of fresh air. she’s the one innocent thing in his life that doesn’t make it seem so shitty. with her around, he’s blind to all his other problems. she makes him feel safe. she brings him to another world where everything has worked out for him the way he wanted and they can be happy together.
eponine is worshipful. marius represents everything that eponine used to have as a child; a bed, nice clothes, money, respect. she wishes for that back, wishes for a time when she didn’t have to steal for food and her parents didn’t abuse her and treat her like dirt. there was a time when her mother coddled her and spoke sweet words to her — but not any longer. with marius she latches her affections onto him because she feels that if he loves her back, she can once again suckle from the life of luxury and transform from a dirty gamine to someone who actually gets to wear dresses that don’t have tears in them. she doesn’t worship marius, she worships his standings as she doesn’t need a man to support her.

I’m just curious, but reblog this if Les Miserables is one of your main fandoms.
